Why do you recommend porcelain for large restorations?
Porcelain matches
the properties of your natural tooth structure. Unlike metal
crowns and bridges, porcelain is chemically
bonded to your tooth using state of the art technology. One
of our patients
is an engineer and he investigated the properties of the
porcelain material from which our restorations are made. He
discovered this
material has the same heat co-efficient and tensile strength
as tooth enamel.
What is biocompatibility testing?
Biocompatibility testing is where antibodies from a sample of
your blood are tested against over 2,500 dental materials
to see if there are any reactions between the two. This allows
you and
Dr.
Hornstein to utilize dental materials that are most compatible
to your body .There is an extra charge for this test that is
performed through an independent laboratory. Not all patients
need this
service.
How much will my fillings cost?
The cost of restorations depends on
how large the area of concern and how long you want it to last.
It is difficult to assign
a standard fee because each person has different wants and
needs. Dr. Hornstein
will gather all the necessary information before he makes
recommendations specific to your clinical situation. We always
inform you of
the total cost of your treatment and secure your permission
before any
work commences. We have many financial options available
and we will schedule your treatment to accommodate your particular
needs.
What sterilization methods do you use?
The sterilization procedures we follow meet or exceed
the guidelines established by OSHA, the Centers for Disease Control, and The
American Dental Association. Our office uses the most advanced sterilization
control measures available today. Please feel free to ask for more
information about the measures that we take to ensure the safety of your
family.
Why don't you use silver mercury fillings?
Dr. Hornstein has never
used mercury fillings since he has been in dentistry. He wanted
to minimize the potential exposure
to himself and his team from mercury and therefore found
other materials more
suitable for restorations he does for his patients. Mercury
is a toxic metal. The EPA has strict guidelines for handling
the disposal of mercury removed from patient's old fillings.
Dentists are
not
allowed to put it in the garbage or even dispose of it
in bio-hazardous trash. They must have special filters on the
drainage pipes
to trap the mercury and it must be handled by a professional
company who
is specially trained in processing this amalgam sludge.
There
is much controversy on this issue and even though mercury
fillings are
outlawed in several European countries, the ADA still
deems this as an acceptable method of restoring teeth. Therefore
we cannot recommend
that our patients have their silver filling removed just
for the sake of getting the mercury out of their teeth. However,
many people
have researched about dental options available to them
and therefore
choose to have these fillings replaced with tooth-colored
fillings. Since our philosophy is to support our patients in
the choices they make for their health, we will do all we can
do to assist
in this
way.
