The thought of a root canal causes great anxiety in many people. Most of the time, people dislike the idea of a root canal, because they think it will cause them tremendous pain. The discomfort comes from the infection inside your tooth, which builds up when the nerves, or pulp, inside the teeth are compromised. We recommend that all root canals be completed by an Endodontist, a dentist with extensive training in root canal therapy. By performing a root canal, the endodontist can save a tooth that might otherwise face extraction.
During a root canal, the dentist will remove the diseased tissue, disinfect the canals with special medicaments, and then temporarily seal the tooth to allow the tooth to heal. A second visit is then needed to thoroughly cleanse and disinfect the tooth of all tissue and debris. The canals in the roots of the teeth are then filled and sealed to prevent future trouble. A microscope is used by the Endodontist to make sure the canals are thoroughly clean. If you experience any soreness afterwards, Dr. Hornstein may suggest an over-the-counter pain medication.
