Silver mercury fillings are one of the most controversial topics in dentistry today. For years, dentists selected these fillings for restoring teeth. The typical adult still has ten amalgam fillings, containing about five grams of mercury. Today, many dentists still choose these types of fillings for their patients, but we believe that mercury-free restorations, or metal-free restorations, support the overall wellness of our patients, so we no longer place metal fillings.
In our office, Dr. Hornstein and Dr. Gray have chosen only mercury-free restorations because:
Silver mercury fillings turn black over time and detract from your white smile, but metal-free restorations blend with your natural teeth.
Metal fillings expand and actually crack teeth resulting in the need for potentially extensive treatment. Mercury-free restorations form a bond with the remaining tooth structure and do not change shape over time.
Mercury, the most toxic, non-radioactive element on earth, escapes from fillings in the form of vapor created by chewing, and then enters the bloodstream. This metal is delivered to all parts of the body, including the brain.
Germany, Austria, Denmark, and Sweden have banned the use of mercury amalgams.
A major manufacturing company of silver mercury fillings has recently begun cautioning against the placement of these fillings in pregnant and nursing mothers, women under 45 years old, children under the age of 7, and people with kidney disease.
The American Dental Association these still believes that metal fillings are safe for placements in teeth. Due to the potential danger and the recommendation of trusted physicians, we have used only metal-free restorations since 1985.
