What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a restoration that is designed to replace one or more teeth. Typically, a bridge has a crown on each end. Those crowns get placed at each end of the gap in your smile, and they support at least one pontic (artificial tooth) between them.
Bridges can be made of various materials, but our practice favors lifelike options that blend in with the surrounding dentition.
Types of Dental Bridges

There are multiple types of dental bridges, the two most common of which are traditional bridges and implant bridges. Both options offer some distinct advantages, and either one can be a great way to replace lost teeth. During your consultation, we will recommend the type of restoration that we believe is the best fit for your circumstances, preferences, and budget.
Traditional Dental Bridges

A traditional dental bridge, also known as a fixed bridge, has a crown on each end. They get cemented on the abutment teeth (the teeth that surround an empty space). A traditional bridge can be quickly designed and placed. In fact, thanks to CEREC technology, it might take just one appointment for us to provide your bridge! The downside to this option is that the abutment teeth must be modified in order to support crowns.
Implant Bridges

Instead of relying on abutment teeth for support, an implant bridge is supported by prosthetic tooth roots (dental implants), which get surgically placed into the jawbone. Although the dental implant process is somewhat lengthy, it can provide incredibly sturdy tooth replacement that lasts for decades. Plus, no modification of nearby teeth is usually necessary.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Bridge

A dental bridge has the potential to provide a range of benefits:
- A dental bridge restores the appearance of your smile by filling the gaps left by missing teeth.
- An implant bridge can stimulate your jawbone and help to keep it healthy.
- Bridges can provide reliable chewing power and prevent premature wear on your remaining natural teeth.
- By providing support, a bridge prevents the remaining teeth from shifting out of position, thus preserving proper alignment.
- A dental bridge can last for many years if it receives proper care.
